Microsoft releases AI teaching assistant
Microsoft Research has launched a project called Shiksha Copilot, using artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in lesson planning and enhance learning experiences. Shiksha, a Sanskrit word meaning instruction, lesson, and learning, aims to empower teachers and improve learning outcomes.
The Shiksha Copilot is designed to create comprehensive, age-appropriate lesson plans, using a blend of online resources such as textbooks, videos, classroom activities, and student assessment tools. An AI-powered digital assistant helps teachers curate resources based on their specific needs.
The project is being piloted at several public schools in and around Bengaluru, India, in collaboration with the Sikshana Foundation, an NGO dedicated to improving public education. In these schools, teachers have found that Shiksha Copilot allows them to put together effective lesson plans faster and more efficiently. For example, Parimala H V, one teacher who used the tool, was able to develop a complete lesson plan in 60 to 90 seconds, instead of 60 to 90 minutes.
The project is part of Microsoft Research India's larger initiative, Project VeLLM, aimed at developing copilots powered by large language models for various domains including education, healthcare, and agriculture.
With a positive early response, the team is set to scale Shiksha Copilot in schools across the state of Karnataka and beyond.
